How I Dance

Topic: Cultural Partying

Source: Going to Parties this weekend

Relation: Understanding how and why people from different backgrounds or cultures behave different in similar circumstances. This weekend I attended multiple parties, each being thrown by different people with different groups of friends so they all were completely different.

Description: One of the parties I attended was a small house party/gathering that mixed techno music with hip hop. There were two groups of people there: the people who were willing to listen to anything because they were used to many types of music and dancing and those who only favored the hip hop music. Some people danced the whole night through no matter what was being played, some dance every 3 to 4 songs because they only could relate to hip hop rhythms. To me hip hop and r & b is what registers to me as good rhythmic music, causing me to dance how I’ve been “cultured” to dance. I find the “dougie” to relate more to me versus some people at the party would rather do the “shuffle.” Though we all had the intentions of just partying and enjoying ourselves I would catch some people laughing at another group or person because of how they were dancing or the song they were singing. Everyone was just doing what they felt and had been taught was the right way of doing things, but because of each individuals naïve realism to them only what they were doing is right.
